Born Havana, Cuba, 1963, into a musical family. During his childhood, Gonzalo absorbed his musical heritage, notably his father, pianist Guillermo Rubalcaba. He also assimilated the tunes of US jazz masters: Thelonius Monk, Bud Powell, Oscar Peterson, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and Art Blakey. In July 1990 he appeared with Charlie Haden at Montreux Festival, Switzerland. These collaborations brought Gonzalo both a Latin Grammy for Jazz Album of the Year, as well as a Grammy for co-production with Charlie Haden of “Nocturne”, a Verve release of boleros. Our Maestro will continue reshaping the Afro-Cuban themes, making our lives something more beautiful.
